Lewis Henning Minn. 56551 Message: Fri 13th June [1975] Dear Mamma - Safely home last nite. Kristen & Ariana arrive tomorrow evening Oh Boy!! Love Lloyd Lloyd A. Lewis, (1917-1987) was a geologist for Shell Oil Company living in Houston when he sent this postcard in June 1975 to his mother, Clara Eugenia Quan (1883-1984) widow of his father Dr. Arthur John Lewis (1883-1962). Lloyd was raised in Henning, Otter Tail County, MN, the middle child in a family of 4 boys and 1 girl. Their father, Arthur John Lewis (1883-1962) was a physician in the town of Henning in Otter Tail County, MN, population about 1,000. Dr. Lewis’ parents were Welsh immigrants Sarah Phillips (1849-1940) and John Lewis (1825-1895). John Lewis was born in Manorbier, Pembrokeshire, Wales, the son of William Hodge Lewis (1797-1868) and Mary A. Price (1794-1871). Welsh families of the time were large, so overpopulation forced all but the oldest sons to leave the area. When he came of age, John chose Wisconsin for his new life, and brothers Rufus and Llewelyn chose Utah, while Lewis and Thomas went to Australia. They must have missed their Welsh homeland at Manorbier, a picturesque farming village near the Celtic Sea with a history reaching back into the 12th Century. Most of the southern coast of Wales is now included within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, encompassing the well-traveled Wales Coast Path.

Before he left the area of Manorbier, John Lewis married Mary Rogers (1823-1865) in 1852 and had 4 children: Mary Ann (1855), William John (1857), Martha Esther (1859) and James Henry (1863). Mary Rogers Lewis died and the family immigrated to America, arriving in New York on 14 October 1867 on the ship Manhattan. Accompanying them was Sarah Phillips, who married John Lewis on Christmas Day in Milwaukee as they travelled to their destination in Central Wisconsin. They settled in Stockton, Portage County, where John Lewis started his second family of 10 children: Emily (1868-1930), Margaret (1870-1918),Gertrude (1873-1905), Adaline (1874-1976), Benjamin Franklin (1876-1967), Thomas Edwin (1878-1957), Ethel M. (1881-1920), Arthur John (1883-1962), Sarah Maude (1885-1979), and Lloyd LaVont (1888-1965). John Lewis died in 1895, leaving Sarah to manage the farm and see to the education of their minor children Thomas (17), Ethel (14), Arthur (12), Sarah (10), and Lloyd (7).
Shortly after his father’s death, Arthur went to live with his sister Gertrude and Uncle Fred Webster in Amherst, about 12 miles southeast of Stockton, but Gertrude was ill and died in 1902. Dr. Webster was a physician, and doubtless served as a mentor for his nephew, who went on to receive to become an M.D. in due course. Arthur attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he met Clara E. Quan, student at the University, daughter of and Caroline Olesen and John Jay Quan (1848-1925), Janitor in the Law Building on campus. John (Johannes) was born in Hafslo, Sogn Og, Norway and Caroline’s parents were also Norwegian. Arthur received his Medical Doctorate at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL in 1909, then began to practice medicine in Omaha. In nearby Council Bluffs, IA on 14 December, 1910 he and Clara married. Dr. A. J. then searched for a rural practice and settled in Hibbing, Otter Tail County, MN where he took over the practice of Dr. McCoy in 1911. Arthur built a fine brick home at 415 Douglas Avenue where he lived and practiced medicine. In 1928 he brought to the practice Dr. James Vail, and when his son Charles Lewis also became a physician, he joined the practice in 1946. A new addition to the building was constructed in 1948 when Dr.James Kevern brought ophthalmology to the office. It was in this rich environment that Lloyd was born in 1917, brother to Caryl (1913) and Wendell Phillips (1915); later the younger siblings joined the family, David Arthur (1918) and Charles William (1920). Lloyd attended the University of Minnesota where he met Mona Mae Heden. He completed a Master’s Degree at Cal Tech, then married Mona on May 21, 1941. He joined Shell Oil Company, where he worked as a geologist for his entire career. He and Mona had 2 daughters, Kristen in 1945 in Wadena, MN and Gwendolyn Ann in 1949 in Sacramento, CA. They lived in many places including California, Canada, Holland, New York and Connecticut before moving to Midland, Texas, in 1957. In a series of 54 postcards mailed from home in Houston between March 1973 and June 1978 he sweetly addressed each to his mother, “Dear Mamma.” By the end of this series, he retired to Midland, TX. He would live his life of leisure less than 9 years before he died on 11 January 1987, the first of his siblings. Mona joined him after 21 years a widow; they are buried in Hillside Cemetery, Ogema, Price Co., WS near her father, Ernest August Heden (1888-1962, once a WS state senator), grandfather August Andreasson Heden (1856-1946) originally from Grinstad, Mellerud, Sweden, and many other Heden relations. |
